Raymond Kurzweil, Google’s chief futurist, claims we will live forever by 2029 with Nanobots. Between crazy and futuristic.

Raymond Kurzweil is known for his progressive and futuristic mind and great Intellect, however, his predictions for humanity are sometimes very hard to believe.

In an essay from 2000 called “Uploading the human Brain- Closer than you Think”, Kurzweil claims:

It starts with uploading or scanning the brain into a computer. One scenario is invasive: One very thin slice at a time, scientists input a brain of choice-having been frozen just slightly before it was going to die at an extremely high speed. This way, they can easily see every neuron, every connection, and every neurotransmitter concentration represented in each synapse-thin layer.

The chief futurist of Google predicted back in 2000 that in 30 years, so in 2030, scientists could copy a person’s whole personality and knowledge into a file and store it in a computer. This could be possible, according to Kurzweil, through “nanobot-blood-cell- size scanning-machines” that could scan the brain through every capillary.

He stresses, that our theory of consciousness should concentrate less on particles but on patterns of matter and energy. “In other words, if we change our definition of consciousness to value patterns over particles”, the uploaded version of me on a computer might be equal to the real me, that is writing this article right now

Another theory of consciousness claims quantum mechanical effects in the brain cause consciousness and could also cause eternal life for us.

The Penrose-Hameroff hypothesis often called the orchestrated objective reduction (Orch-OR) theory, is a theory of consciousness put forth by anesthesiologist Stuart Hameroff and mathematician Roger Penrose. According to this idea, awareness develops as a result of quantum interactions between neuronal microtubules in the brain.

The idea proposes that microtubules, which are minuscule structures that support the maintenance of the neuron’s form, are a component of the neurons in the brain. Tubulins, a type of protein molecule that may exist in both a “classical” and a quantum form, are the building blocks of the microtubules.

However, this theory is mostly regarded as false and even disproved among cognitive scientists, physicists, and researchers on consciousness.

But what do you think? What is your favorite theory of consciousness and why?
